On a perfect day of cloudless blue skies, in the wonderful setting of Crakehall village, after several years of defeats to the always-strong Crakehall side, a real all-round performance saw a famous Romany victory, to which every player contributed!

Elgot’s captaincy debut at Leeds Caribbean

Thanks to Badar Zaman’s late call up we managed to field eleven players for what is one of the highlights of the Romany season, our annual fixture with Leeds Caribbean. In the absence of our captain and vice-captains I took over the Romany captaincy for the first time.

A rather weaker than usual Caribbean side won the toss and batted. They were reduced to 47 – 8 at one point by some excellent Romany bowling on a pitch that had a lot in it for the bowlers. Our old friend Keon Williams, now 16 years old, then led a recovery by Caribbean and was still there at the end. Caribbean were all out for 116 with one ball left of the 35 overs.

Festival time at Bolton Percy

Having dealt with several last minute team changes and one or two transport related hiccups – not least the closure of the road to the ground – I was relieved to find that we did have at least ten players to start the game with one more making his way from court; prosecuting not being prosecuted, or so he said. We managed to press a passing Wesley Bell into fielding for a few overs, and with the subsequent help of several Bolton Percy substitutes we managed to get to the 30th over, or so, when our 11th man (Matt Donkin) finally joined us.
